January 10, 2012   4 notes
I have decided to endure my profession as a Surplus Person for a year. I started my experiment on November 5th 2011, and I will continue to wear my uniform and disseminate information about the Surplus caste until November 5th 2012. This contract with myself did not come out of the blue. I was lent a book that discusses the lifeworks of Tehching Hsieh, a performance artist active in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. He spent 5 years of his life dedicating each of those years to a specific action/performance. With the help of friends and attorneys (for the drawing up of documents legitimizing the performance in the eyes of the law) he succeeded in breeching his own limits. He measured the time by shaving his head at the beginning of the process, and letting it grow out for the entire year.
